How Much Does It Fit: HH Duffel 50L

I know what you’re thinking. “I know how much HH Duffel 50L fits …. 50 liters.” Well, you’re right. No arguments here. But how much is 50L really? How often do you measure things in liters? Buying twenty five 2 liter soda bottles is not the same, for sure, but how much room is really in a 50 liter bag? Any idea?

I wasn’t sure either. It turns out that 50 liters is equal to 13.2 gallons. Okay, if you fill your car up as often as I do, you have some idea of that amount. But to me, when I think of 13.2 gallons, all I can think of is how expensive gasoline is these days, not how much room it takes up. 50 liters is also equal to 1690.7 ounces. That means even less to me.

But what in real life can the Helly Hansen Duffel fit? Clearly it can fit more than the STM Revolution and the Patagonia Half Mass Messenger that I stuffed full before. But that’s because its a duffel. Not a huge duffel, but appropriately sized.  So this week I tested the Helly Hansen Duffel with a Queen size quilt, a weeks worth of clothes, and magazines, lots of them.

The quilt lived up to my expectations and more! I managed to stuff my entire queen sized quilt into this bag before my camera died. This was before I could get the picture of the actual quilt, but you’re going to have to trust me. The bag wasn’t bulging or overly stuffed at all.  I guess the bag looked so good it broke the camera.

Next, I was able to fit a weeks worth of clothes into this bag with room to spare! 6 shirts, 4 pants and a sweatshirt isn’t a ton of clothes, but its what I would take on a trip. Yes, I may pack less than other people, including my colleagues, but this is still impressive.

Next I fit magazines. You know what I learned? I have way too many magazines in my house. I was able to fit two very large stacks of magazines in this bag, and while it fit, it was too heavy to be practical. It turns out, the size of the bag wasn’t the problem,  it was just my weak back.

The Helly Hansen Duffel 50L is a great duffel bag. This medium sized bag is durable, stylish and perfect for short trips. Its got organization pockets, side pockets, and a huge main compartment. Additionally, the backpack straps make this bag comfortable and perfect for traveling. Not big enough for months on the road and carrying everything you own, but perfect for a short vacation.  If you find that you need more room, just go for the larger size, the Helly Hansen 90L Duffel. And for the price, this is one of the best duffel bag deals I’ve seen.

Great review! I wish I had read this before I ordered my bag, but now I’m glad I did order it! I couldn’t decide between the 90l and the 50l. After reading your review, I think that the 50l will be perfect! Thanks!
